Hey guys thanks for coming by. This topic is mostly aimed for high school students, but if you've just started college and stuff you could answer too. Now I know being a teen and especially one with not or not a lot of sight, it's not always easy, but we deal rite? I don't know about you all but I am still wondering what I want to do career wise and otherwise. In high school we're tought to explore all our options and find out what's best for us and what could possibly fit with us I guess as individuals, and so I was just wondering about the teens on this site's goals in life. Especially those almost graduating high school and moving on to post secondary and I guess the "bigger world". So, I compiled a little survey of my own questions. They might come off random at some points, but it'll give me an idea of where you all are at and maybe in a way we could help each other out with our experiences and get ideas maybe. And, lol I’m just curious. I'll post my answers soon afterwards.

How old are you:
Public or blind high school:
Would you have it any other way?:
How blind are you exactly?
Are you in any extra curricular activities?:
What level of courses are you taking?:
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?:
Marks and highest marks:
Do you want a family of your own?:
Marriage?:
Do you have a high school job?:
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?:
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?:

Hey there. I'm a tad older than you might've been aiming for, but I'm in college, and it looked like an interesting survey.

How old are you:
20
Public or blind high school:
Was public all through, except for summer programs.
Would you have it any other way?:
I think it would've been cool to try the half and half programs that a lot of blind schools do, but if I had to choose total blind school or total public, I'd go total public.
How blind are you exactly?
Total, no eyes.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?:
When in HS I was in multiple extra choirs, and in a couple clubs off and on through the 4 years. Now that I'm in college, I haven't done as much in that area. My current college doesn't have much there. But I am in one of the few they do have.
What level of courses are you taking?:
Not sure I understand the question. If you're talking honors or regular, I only took one honors class in HS, and then my family moved in the middle of the year, so I can't properly say I finished it.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?:
I've known for years it was going to be something in computers. These days I say probably computer networking or forensics.
Marks and highest marks:
In high school I got either a's or b's. In college I haven't done as well, though I have gotten 1 A+, something I never did in high school. So who knows it might balance itself out in the end.
Do you want a family of your own?:
Yes, I think so. If I didn't I'd have to go into teaching or something in that area later in life.
Marriage?:
I assume you're asking if I wish to be / intend to be someday. Yes, though I have a bit of a different idea about marriage than some, but that's for a different discussion.
Do you have a high school job?:
No, I didn't when in.
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?:
Employers hiring me when I get done. I've heard many stories of plenty of people being fully quallified for a job, but despite that, employers not hiring them because of them being blind. I very much don't want to live off SSI any more than I have to.
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?:
On my own, and wouldn't have it any other way. (Quallification: that's aimed towards parents. I don't necessarily have a problem with living with others.)
Get along with them?:
Yes, as long as they only are here for short visits, or they're a long ways away.
Siblings:
Brother and sister, both a good bit older than I am.
How about them:
I'm on good terms with them, though I don't talk to them as much as I should.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?:
Decent. I can get places I want to reasonably well, though I'll admit that I could be better.
Have you had a job before?:
Yep.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?:
Depends on the situation. Overall, I'm pretty laid back, more than I probably should be, though I can be persistent if push comes to shove.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?:
Yes. It's something I've gotten somewhat better about, but I can be pretty stubborn, and often times don't ask for help until I've bashed my head into the wall a few times. :)

thanks a lot and what i meant by levels is like, in texas i don't know about any other states, in high school there's the minimal plan, the recommended plan then the extinguished plan. you could take AP classes and duel creddit which is cool, i wanna take some cuz they look good for college...it's funny though, when i first moved i thaught all these plans sounded like some sort of life insurance shit lol. But yeah, anyways, keep it going guys.

Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?: I live with my parents.
Get along with them?: Yes and no. I talk to them some times, but mostly I spend time in my room. However, I am not against spending time with them.
Siblings: None.
How about them:
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?: My mobility still needs some work, I need to practice traveling on my own a bit more. Still working on the independence too.
Have you had a job before?: Yes.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?: I am very determined when interested in the situation at hand, and the same goes with persistance. I could do with speaking up a bit more though when trying to be persistent.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: Most of the time I don't.

Hey guys. I am 31 so, hey, I am old and shouldn't even be reading this. But I had to post. I am glad you guys are all public all the way when it comes to public vs blind schools. I was interested to see what people would say. I went to public school all the way, but there was a lot of pressure to do otherwise, on my family before I knew what was going on, i.e. when I was 4, and subsequently on me to take placements for a semester or more at the blind school. I resisted at all times, thinking that I would be much better off favouring academics and staying with the friends I had made, and this assumption proved to be correct. I did spend a week at our local blind school for a placement on two occasions, and I found it quite a waste of time both times. Personal experiences, of course, but it sounds like most of you share it.

Post 14 by Chicken Scratch (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 02-Jan-2008 17:33:36

Heya...Well, I stopped by and thought this looked interesting. So here we go:

How old are you: 14 (high-school, ninth grade)
Public or blind high school: Blind one year, public the rest
Would you have it any other way?: yes, all public school.
How blind are you exactly? I'm a total, no light perseption, nothing.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?: Running club, flower arranging (ugh...), sign language classes.
What level of courses are you taking?: Tenth grade courses, I think.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?: Yeah, I want to become an author
Marks and highest marks:...Depends on what year you're asking about. This year, mostly as and bs.
Do you want a family of your own?: Well, I haven't really considered right now.
Marriage?: See above.
Do you have a high school job?: I work at our school's cafe part-time sometimes (although i'm more of a back-up staffer-they call me in when someone else can't make it).
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?: Getting an actual job while I try and get my first book published :D
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?: With parents.
Get along with them?: Mostly, yeah.
Siblings: Two of them-one brother, one sister.
How about them: Apart from the occasional, normal sibling rivalry issues, yeah, we get along fine.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?: I think both are good-independence more than mobility, though, since I'm still having trouble learning my way around our town.
Have you had a job before?: No.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?: Depends on what I'm persisting at.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: yes, I do.

Post 15 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Wednesday, 02-Jan-2008 20:26:58

Ok, I'm 24, and graduated college in May of 2007, but I couldn't help it. I love surveys and this was a really good one.

How old are you: 24 lol
Public or blind high school: Public.
Would you have it any other way?: No.
How blind are you exactly? I'm totally blind, no light perception or anything, ever since I was two months old.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?: In high school, I wrote for the school newspaper if that counts and was in the chorus one year. In college, I was in a few clubs (Sociology and Greek) but no one really did anything, especially in the latter, which annoyed me. There was hardly anyone there and we never met... lol
What level of courses are you taking?: I have a BA in Sociology and minors in History and Anthropology. I also have an internationally recognised certificate to teach English as a Second Language. In high school, I had a few honour's classes and a few AP (advanced placement ones) and in college I was in a few honour's as well.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?: I'll probably get into Nemeth transcription for now. Ideally, I'd love to put myself through culinary school and get into the food business.
Marks and highest marks: I graduated with a 4.0 gpa.
Do you want a family of your own?: Yes, someday.
Marriage?: Yes, someday.
Do you have a high school job?: I had a college job, shreading papers (or destroying documents, as I say on my resume).
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?: Getting a steady job, learning Greek fluently so I'll feel confident enough to live there or at least to work with other Greeks, and learning enough independence skills to really make it on my own.
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?: I technically live with Grandma, but my parents are here so often that they might as well live here. They only live a few minutes away in the next town.
Get along with them?: I've made a sort of resolution to get along better with Grandma. I pretty much get along fine with Mom, but don't see Joanie enough to fight that much. She's here all the time, as I said, but pretty much does her own thing.
Siblings: One twin brother, who's adopted an lives in New York. We're not close at all, but not enemies. Just different worlds.
How about them: He's rich (no exageration), being brought up Jewish and is a spoiled selfish brat, but I blame his mother for most of it. I think he'll be ok if he gets his head on straight. Oh, and he's totally sighted.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?: My mobility is kind of ok, though I wouldn't stake my life on it. My independence isn't that bad, though I could learn a fw things. Still, I'm proud of myself.
Have you had a job before?: Yes, I have one now, helping my boyfriend with scheduling appointments, taking calls from customers etc. He repairs keyboards, synthesizers, amplifiers and mixers.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?: Very, when it's something I want. But I'm also very lazy and a huge procrastinator, so it takes me awhile to get going.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: No, but I have trouble with people constantly giving me help without asking first.

Post 16 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Thursday, 07-Feb-2008 2:31:26

How old are you:
I am fifteen
Public or blind high school:
public high school, and it's a classical high school.
Would you have it any other way?:
No, way! This is great! I'd get all my credits and can possiblly get in to a really good university.
How blind are you exactly?
I am totally blind.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?:
No, not really.
What level of courses are you taking?:
excellerated freshman classes
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?:
Yes, of course! I want to be an English teacher and a writer on the side.
Marks and highest marks
I only get a and b things. I have all a except one b, which is in science.:
Do you want a family of your own?:
Yes, but I don't want to conceive any, I'd rather adopt
Marriage?:
perhaps
Do you have a high school job?:
No.
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?:
My grades and getting in to university successfully.
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?:
I live with both of my parents
Get along with them?:
Not exactly.
Siblings:
One sister and she is younger. She's ten.
How about them:
Not really.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?:
Pretty good when I want it, I mean my mobility part.
Have you had a job before?:
Nothing, except some volunteering for my service hours, and the teacher I worked with told me he wanted to hier me.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?:
Very! I am very persistent. People find it annoying.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?:
Absolutely not!

Post 17 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Saturday, 02-Aug-2008 20:35:47

How old are you: 18
Public or blind high school: blind
Would you have it any other way?: Definitely. I could complain about Overbrook all day.
How blind are you exactly? I only have light perception.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?: I'm on the swimming team, play goalball, and I'm in the choir.
What level of courses are you taking?: Well, because I'm in a blind school, they're not on the level with regular high school courses. It literally takes me 5 minutes to do my homework.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?: I wanted to get into psychology or social work, but due to the excessive amount of time you have to spend in college for that, and the fact I'm in a serious relationship and am planning for us to live together, as well as other things like needing a change of scenery, I don't think I'll do that. I don't care what it is as long as it makes me happy, but I guess I haven't totally decided.
Marks and highest marks: I usually get straight a's. But don't take that as me being a goody 2 shoes, it's just the fact that the work at my school is child's play.
Do you want a family of your own?: yes
Marriage?: seriously considering it
Do you have a high school job?: no, but I'd take one in a heartbeat, but I live in the middle of nowhere and that's hard to do at the moment
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?: that my family won't accept my choices
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?: with my parents
Get along with them?: my mom yes, my dad probably never
Siblings:
How about them: I have an older sister, and we get along well.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?: I'm getting better. It takes practice.
Have you had a job before?: Yes, a volunteer one if that counts.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?: If there's something I really want, I will do anything to get it, although I'm usually forced to do things alone because I don't have much support, and I'm afraid of disappointing people, so I'm convinced I can do it all myself.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: yes, but I know I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and face it if I want to live on my own

Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: Yes I hate people to think that I'm so defenseless, but I'll ask if I really need it.

How old are you: 16
Public or blind high school: I went half and half ninth and tenth grade for language classes, now at the blind school full time again.
Would you have it any other way?: I wish I could have taken the language online, the only public highschool I could go to was a total reck. Lazy VI teachers never getting anything bbrailled, just doing our work for us instead. Or the teacher just giving us a's. Which is what happen in my computer class because they wouldn't give us a computer with any more than Jaws 4 on it. I didn't learn a thing there except in english. I loved the english classes there.
How blind are you exactly? I"m a total. always have been.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?: I do cheerleading and track and ferendsicks, which is like a speaking club where you have different choices like poems and inprov. And I take horseback riding lessons.
What level of courses are you taking?: There is no choices at a blind school.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?: I either want to be a massage therapist or a vet tech.
Marks and highest marks: I have to get a's and b's. No questions there. and its pretty easy except I struggle a bit with math.
Do you want a family of your own?: No.
Marriage?: Sure
Do you have a high school job?: I worked at an amuzement park this summer. And now I take a world of work class for the last 3 periods of every day, So after lunch I go off campus and work for a few hours, and we're getting paid for it this year as well. Last years class didn't so, that's pretty cool.
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?: That I won't be able to get a job.
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?: I go back and forth every week from my moms to my dads.
Get along with them?: My dad is cool, just not my stepmom.
Siblings: 1 older sister who lives at my dads, 2 younger half sisters and a half brother at my moms.
How about them: My older sister is cool, and the younger ones are babies, we don't fight yet. lol.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?: i'm working really really really hard on mobility, and I think the going to and from work thing is really helping me. I can't cook either but everything else is good. I don't need help getting around places I no well. And I don't need help picking out or putting on or packing clothes like some people.
Have you had a job before?: yeah. already talked about those.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?: Well, I start out that way but, I get very impatient sometimes and just say fuck it if i'm not getting it write off but, after a while i'll usually try again.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?: Not if its from someone I no but from people I don't no, yes, unfortunetly.

Classes for both juniors and seniors.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?:

Yes

Well, I figured i'd throw this in here. I haven't read all of the posts in response to this, but it looks interesting, so here goes.

How old are you:
16, grade 11
Public or blind high school:
blind school since grade 10
Would you have it any other way?:
Considering the crap my sighted school put me through from 2005 to 2007, no way!
How blind are you exactly?
Very blind, lol.
Are you in any extra curricular activities?:
No. I want to play goalball, but unfortunately that's only for residence people, and since I live five minutes from the school, I'm not in residence.
What level of courses are you taking?:
Mostly university level courses, but colege level english, partially because I am very interested in the material and the way in which the course is taught is a lot better for me, and partially because I despise the university level english teacher.
What do you want to get into career wise, do you have an idea?:
Something music / audio production related, haven't quite made up my mind about that yet. I know I love writing music and sound editing, and I'm pretty good at it as well.
Marks and highest marks:
Math is probably lowest, I've never been particularely good at what we're doing at the moment. English and world religions are probably my two highest. I know I got A's in both last term.
Do you want a family of your own?:
Some day...
Marriage?:
Maybe before the family?
Do you have a high school job?:
No, and if I had a bit less homework I would probably want one.
What are you most worried about (if anything) about your future?:
Moving out and successfully living on my own.
Do you live on your own or with parents/guardians?:
I live with my mother.
Get along with them?:
A bit over half the time.
Siblings:
Nope
How about them:
It might be nice to have one, but not now that I'm so much older. If I had one all my life that I trusted and got along with, that would be cool.
How good is your mobility and independence as a whole?:
Half decent. It needs improvement, but I can still get to some places. And hey, i'm still alive, am i not?
Have you had a job before?:
No.
How persistent/determined/driven are you?:
Very, if it's something i'm actually interested in.
Do you have trouble asking for help if you need it?:
Yes, unfortunately, and that is one thing I really wish I could learn to do.

Reyami,
I'm going to be doing music education, with a concentration in flute. I will perform on the side. But I will probably minor or double major in something else.

1. 16
2. I went to public school until halfway through tenth grade. I decided to give blind school a try just to say that I tried it and my quality of life is amazing, amazing, amazing right now.
3. Have what any other way? School? No! I'm glad I went to public school for as long as I did, because I wouldn't appreciate blind school as much as I do now if I didn't. Blind school is not for everyone, but everyone should give it a try, preferably in high school when you are not impressionable as a person. You have to know yourself because people everywhere will try to change you in all these different ways.
4. I am totally blind with some light perception.
5. I have done track this year as well as goalball. At the end of last school year I did swimming for about 3 weeks. I am also in the BETA Club. My boyfriend is the national BETA president!
6. I am taking grade-level courses. I do better than anyone else in my class. Not trying to brag.
7. I know what I would like to study in college, however I don't know what I want to do with it. I want to study psychology, and maybe some sociology, philosophy, and medical stuff.
8. What the hell is marks and highest marks? Are you from Canada? If that means grades, B plus average for me.
9. My boyfriend wants a family but I am not rushing in to that. I've seen too many struggling parents. My mom was one. I am not dealing with that kind of lifestyle and I am not too proud to admit that in this point of my life, I am way too damn selfish for kids.
10. Marriage! That's a hard one. I've seen too many marriage problems. I want to get married, but it is not something I take lightly at all and it isn't something I would rush in to.
11. I do not have a high school job. I have too much other stuff going on in my life.
12. I am most worried about my quality of life. I don't handle stress well and adult life seems very stressful. I hope I can still have fun with life and it'll be worth living for me.
13. I live at the school but come home to parents on the weekend.
14. I am very good friends with both my mom and my step-dad. My biological dad, I don't talk to much.
15. I have two siblings. Both brothers, both younger than me.
16. I get along OK with them, when they talk to me at all, which is rarely.
17. My mobility is mediocre. Well, compared to other blind people I am really good, but I'm not very confident. I get scared of being left or getting lost so that is a hinderence to me. I am very independent and that is my goal before I graduate is to be able to do as much as I POSSIBLY can independently.
18. I had a job working in the kitchen at my school for a few weeks but they fired me because I got sick too much and had to go home a lot.
19. It depends on what for. I tend to be a quitter but I am smart and canusually get exactly what I want if I want it enough.
20. I don't have trouble asking for help, I have trouble knowing exactly what it is that I need help with.
